Social science is, in its broadest sense, the study of society and the manner in which people behave and influence the world around us. It tells us about the world beyond our immediate experience, and can help explain how our own society works  from the causes of unemployment or what helps economic growth, to how and why people vote, or what makes people happy. It provides vital information for governments and policymakers, local authorities, nongovernmental organizations and others.

Social work (Dip/Cert)

Social work is a helping field. A social worker is a professional who works to help people. Most often he or she is a professional who works with people and helps them manage their daily lives, understand and adapt to illness, disability, and death, and obtain social services, such as health care, government assistance and legal aid. Other social workers work as administrators in social service settings, write grants for nonprofit agencies, advocate for social policy at various levels of
government, and conduct research.

Community Health & Development (Dip/Cert)

It seeks to promote the community's voice within the health care system through development of the role of Community Health Workers and provides a forum to share resources and strategies.

A Community Health Worker (CHW) is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the CHW to serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery.

A CHW also builds individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and selfsufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy, also known as village health worker, community health aide, community health promoter, and lay health advisor.

Environmental health Management (Dip/Cert)

is the integration of science and engineering principles to improve the natural environment, to provide healthy water, air, and land for human habitation and for other organisms, and to clean up pollution sites. Furthermore, it is concerned with finding plausible solutions in the field of public health.

"If you want a career that is exciting, challenging, and allows you to succeed, excel, and feel good about what you do, then consider the field of dietetics. Dietetics is the hightech science of applying food and nutrition to health. It's a vital, growing field open to creativity and opportunityand the possibilities are endless.

Health, nutrition, and fitness have become a way of life. People want to feel good and look good. Eating right for a healthier lifestyle and learning about good nutrition are top priorities, and people are eager to learn even more. These changes mean increased opportunities in the field of dietetics.

Dietetics professionals work in healthcare, education and research. They work in sales, marketing and public relations. Registered dietitians and dietetic technicians also work in government, restaurant management, fitness, food companies, and in private practice. The direction you take, and how far you take it, are your choices."

Health Record & Info Mgt (Dip/Cert)

In the healthcare delivery system, patient care relies heavily on the availability of precise and complete information.

Health records and information personnel are therefore responsible for organizing information systems to give this support that involves application of clinical knowledge, information technology and database management.

All these must be done with due regard to ethical and legal consideration and emphasizes on the personal and sensitive nature of the information being collected and processed.

The history of health records runs parallel with the history of medicine. Health records are necessary for the practice of medicine as medications are for effective treatment and they seem to have been made from earliest antiquity.

Conflict and Disaster Management (Dip/Cert)

Conflict can be defined as disagreements, misunderstandings, disharmony or even disunity that can occur between two or more parties over a given subject. Conflict if not checked can lead to violence and subsequently destruction of property injuries and death.

Present conflicts revolve around societies, communities and even states. Students taking this course are equipped with knowledge and skills which enable them to resolve the conflict between parties and help the affected to broker peace.

Disaster can be defined as a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society. Disasters involve widespread human, material, economic or environmental impacts, which exceed the ability of the affected community or society to cope using its own resources. Any disaster can interrupt essential services, such as health care, electricity, water, sewage/garbage removal, transportation and communications. The interruption can seriously affect the health, social and economic networks
of local communities and countries.

Disasters have a major and longlasting impact on people long after the immediate effect has been mitigated. Therefore we impart knowledge to our students on:

2. Disaster preparedness

3. Disaster relief

4. Disaster recovery
